Penzone House- USA
DESCRIPTION
A large open plan residence on a private golf course. Here, the formality of a large neo-Georgian house is a bold contrast to the natural parkland setting. The challenge was to create usable space that visually and practically linked the house to the surroundings.

By emulating the shapes and forms of the adjacent golf course, this design provides a comfortable transition from the very formal residence to its surroundings. Large circular, natural stone terraces, and lawn areas, mimic the golf greens, while the use of ornamental grasses relates to those used on the course itself.

Extensive, composite- brick and block retention walls create different levels, and disappearing pathways draw you through the various spaces. The main lawn area is retained, so as to be level and functional, and also act like a 'HaHa' so that the view from the house is uninterrupted. The flagstone we used was cut from large irregular slabs, hand dressed on all edges, and laid on mortar on reinforced concrete.

Evergreen planting was also used to form the 'structural' components of the design, so that the integrity was not lost during the harsh winters. The ornamental grasses, intentionally not cut back until Spring, are also part of the winter-scape.
